Praying with the Body:  Exploring Embodied Prayer Practices, East and West

Many in "the West" are turning towards "the East" to re-discover their bodies as a form of spiritual practice.  What many of us are surprised to discover is that the Christian tradition has a long and established contemplative body practice of its own:  the Eastern Christian tradition of hesychasm, also known as "the prayer of the heart."  This evening workshop will include a talk on forms of yoga in both the Indian and Christian traditions as well as a guided experiential practice where we will utilize the body as a vehicle of prayerful communion.

Contemplative Body Dialogue: An Embodied Exploration of Posture, Breath and Movement

Contemplative Body Dialogue is an active inquiry into the physical, mental-emotional and energetic aspects of the body. Based on the fundamentals of centuries-tested yoga practice, we will explore the use of breath (pranayama), posture (asana), and meditation (dhyana), as well as more intuitive or “authentic” forms of movement to deepen our relationship to body, self and spirit. Contemplative Body Dialogue is an embodied contemplative practice to compassionately examine “what shows up for you” both on and off the yoga mat, and create a stronger “container” to both hold space for and play “the edge” of both the light and dark elements of yourself.

Workshops or yoga classes can be offered as a multi-weekly series or an afternoon or evening "mini-retreat" as well as an "add-on" to an otherwise already established retreat schedule.

PRIVATE YOGA

Private yoga sessions occur in a safe, comfortable and relaxed environment, making it possible for you to evolve your personal practice as well as to integrate the deeper physical, emotional and energetic dimensions of yoga.  During private sessions we work on any number of specific areas of your practice that you wish to explore, including:  basic or advanced asana (postures), pranayama (breathwork), and meditation/deep relaxation (guided or otherwise).  In all areas we focus on proper alignment, breathing, and energetic/emotional elements of the pose as well as making living connections between the ancient philosophy of yoga and how we practice it "off the mat" in our daily lives.

Private sessions also offer an opportunity to work in a constructive way with any personal limitations (physical or emotional) that may be arising for you - on or off the mat.  While private yoga sessions are not therapy, they may be therapeutic. In that sense we invite unacknowledged or even disowned parts of ourselves "back home," inviting into our lives a greater sense of wholeness, vitality and aliveness.
